The case for slow strategy on a small screen

The case for slow strategy on a small screen

June 11, 2026 · Marta Kowalczyk

A lot of mobile strategy games mistake speed for excitement. Timers everywhere, constant notifications, a demand that you check in every few hours. Tideborn Tactics went the other way and was better for it.

It's a game about thinking. Managing supply lines, routing fleets around storms, scouting islands before committing. Each turn invites a pause, and the small screen somehow suits that deliberate pace.

The learning curve is steep at the start. The tutorial dumps a lot on you at once, and I nearly quit before the systems clicked. Once they did, though, the game opened into something I kept thinking about between sessions.

If you've written off mobile strategy as shallow, try one of the slow ones. There's room for patience on a phone, even if the market doesn't always believe it.
